Technology Articles | June 23, 2011

Sincethe release of the LG Optimus 2X, the first smartphone to incorporate adual-core processor, several more handsets now boast this next generationtechnology. Among these are the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the LG Optimus 3D.

In this article I will give a comparison of these twohandsets so you can decide which comes out on top. To give a fair comparison Iwill look at a few of the features which are most important when choosing a newsmartphone.

Camera

Obviously, a smartphone would not be a smartphone if it didnot come with a built in digital camera. The Samsung Galaxy S2 provides a highspec 8 megapixel offering, with all the bells and whistles you would expectfrom the manufacturers flagship device. Thanks to the high pixel resolutionprovided by the 8 million pixel count the resulting pictures are of fantasticquality and the camera can even shoot 1080p HD video footage as an added bonus. The camera on the LG Optimus 3D is a 5 megapixel unit, but offers the abilityto shoot 3D video as the name of the handset suggests. It is largely down topersonal preference which is better; is 3D an important aspect to you? If yes, then the LG Optimus 3D is the better cameraphone, but for all roundfunctionality and results, you may prefer the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Operating System & User Interface

The Samsung Galaxy S2 ships with the latest version of theAndroid OS, version 2.3 also known as Gingerbread. The LG Optimus 3D comes withthe previous version, 2.2 but it is upgradeable to the later version. bothhandsets are therefore able to access the Android Market where users can browsethousands of apps from many different categories, and download them straight tothe phone. Over the top of the Android OS, each manufacturer has provided theircustom Android OS. In the case of the LG Optimus 3D it is the LG 3D UI, and theGalaxy S2 has TouchWiz v4.0 UI. Each of these is simply provided to simplifynavigation and functionality of the operating system itself. They both allowusers to customise their user interface, and assign various apps and widgets toindividual homescreens as well as set themes and colour schemes to the UI. Onein not necessarily better than the other, as they both provide a similarexperience but go about it in a slightly different way so it is largely down topersonal preference.

Processor

Both handsets boast dual-core processors. The LG Optimus 3Dcomes with a 1 GHz dual-core processor whilst the 1.2 GHz offering under thehood of the Samsung Galaxy S2 is slightly more powerful. Whilst the Samsung GalaxyS2 may have a slightly more powerful processor on paper, both provide stunningperformance. The benefits of dual-core processors are numerous; better web pageloading times, increased response times from the touchscreen, more efficientmultitasking and faster loading of apps are some of the advantages of thistechnology.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the LG Optimus 3D arestunning devices, and among the most advanced smartphones currently available. Both are light years ahead of the vast majority of their competition. It wouldbe unfair to say one is better than the other, but on paper the Samsung GalaxyS2 just has the edge in terms of specifications and performance.
